Tim Lawton Graduation Celebration

Saturday evening, May 2, 2015, the church held a dinner to celebrate Tim Lawton’s college graduation.   Tim will graduate from Cedarville University with a BS degree in Electrical Engineering in December after finishing his last few classes.  Since there isn’t a ceremony in December, Tim participated in the May 2 graduation ceremony.  Tim’s parents, Jeff and Nadine Lawton, his sister, Sarah Uhlich, and his nephew, Roper Uhlich came to cheer him on as well as help him pack as he returns home to Rhode Island for the summer.

tim grad 4As part of the dinner, Tim & his parents presented a Certificate of Appreciation tim grad 5to the church.  Signed by Tim, the certificate read “to honor and recognize the confidence, devotion, guidance, and assistance freely given in helping me obtain this important milestone in my life.”  Pastor Robert Van Horn accepted the certificate on behalf of the church.

The menu for the dinner included lasagna, bread, and salad followed with a decorated cake from Cora’s Confections and a variety of ice cream flavors from Johnson’s.   The food was delicious, the fellowship entertaining, and the evening was enjoyed by all in attendance.

Camp Joy Pre-Camp May 16-17, 2015

camp joy pre-campThere will be a Pre-Camp this year at Camp Joy in Berea, West Virginia.  The dates are May 16-17, 2015 and it is for kids in 1st and 2nd grades to give them a taste of what “real camp” will be like.  If there are older kids who have not yet participated at Camp Joy, they are also invited to come to this Pre-Camp and be “helpers”.  The Pre-Camp will start at 2pm on Sabbath afternoon, May 16, and will end after lunch on Sunday, May 17, at 1pm.  The director for this Pre-Camp is Mrs. Chris Sias.  Registration is required, so please contact Chris to let her know what kids are able to come, or if you have any questions. The cost is minimal, only $5 per person, to cover the cost of insurance.  We hope all of our kids in the 1st and 2nd grades will be able to come and enjoy the pre-camp experience at Camp Joy! (First graders are included in this program because it is not an annual event)

If you have to travel a distance to bring children and want to assist with the camp, adult helpers are appreciated. Bring the basic Camp Joy Camper Registration Form with you. If there are any food allergies, advance notice would be appreciated. Response with the number of anticipated participants would be appreciated a week before Pre-Camp.

Looking forward to this fun and spiritual camping time!

April 2015 Business Meeting Highlights

Several members of the Pataskala Seventh Day Baptist Church met on Sabbath afternoon, April 15, 2015 following a sack lunch to plan, consider, discuss, pray and act on God’s activity through our church.   We started by hearing reports from the pastor, deacons, Sabbath School superintendent, trustees, Children’s Church leaders, and our branch church in Puerto Rico.

Children’s Church is only going to be held on the 3rd week of each month at this time instead of every week.  The adult Sabbath School is going to be changing its format from using the Helping Hand to short (4-6 week) topical studies with different teachers for each topic.  Pastor Robert confirmed that he is planning to attend a Global Awakening conference session in mid August in Memphis.  We voted to accept Linda Camenga’s request to transfer her membership from the Kissimmee branch of the Miami SDB church to our church. camp joy 1 It was voted to pay half of the fees for camper’s sponsored by our church to Camp Joy in Berea, WV this summer.   Volunteers were appointed to the Nominating (Kym Goodson) and Petitions & Resolutions (Johnny Long) committees at the Appalachian Association meetings to be held June 26-28, 2015 at Camp Joy sponsored by the Lost Creek SDB Church.   Dean Fox was appointed the chairman for delegates to annual General Conference which will be held July 26-Aug 1, 2015 in Lancaster, PA.

Lana Van Horn was recommended by the deacons to be added as an additional deacon, and the church voted to accept their recommendation.  Lana’s 5-year term will go through January 2020.   The 4th quarter mission offering (Oct-Dec) was voted to go to the SDB Missionary Society with the specific project identified by our Missionary Key Worker, Marge Patrick in the September timeframe.   Susie Fox agreed to update the Prayer Chain and Church Directory and will be collecting new and updated information from interested parties for both of these.

Quarterly Mission Offering Focus Changes

SuttonsBeginning on April 4, we started collecting our “Building Up the Temple” mission offering for Laura & Joel Sutton who are currently missionaries in Haiti with Reciprocal Ministries International (RMI).   Laura and Joel began a five year tenure arriving in Haiti in late 2014. Joel’s primary focus is facilities maintenance for FIVE different buildings/properties that are used in the RMI ministry, as well as serving as a missionary host to sister church teams visiting Haiti.   Laura is responsible for communication and making sure the teams have everything in order when they come down. Laura is also a Registered Nurse and helps coordinate health care church teams, but other parts of her healthcare role are on hold for now.  You can see the latest news and pictures on Laura’s Facebook page and Joel’s Facebook page.

Building Up the Temple mission offering is designated by quarter

This offering is taken during the worship service as congregation joyfully sings “We’re building up the temple, building up the temple, building up the temple of the Lord! Say, brothers, won’t you help us….sisters, won’t you help us…we’re building up the temple of the Lord!”  and children & adults bring money forward to put in the drawer of a little wooden building.

Each quarter the offering goes to a mission project chosen by the church during it’s regular business meeting.   The 2015 first quarter (Jan-Mar) offering totalled $225 for “Save the Storks” mobile vans providing counselling and ultrasound services to pregnant mothers considering abortion.   savethestorksComing up in the third quarter (July-Sept) funds will go toward preparation of Operation Christmas Child boxes.  occ boxes The fourth quarter (Oct-Dec) recipient for the mission offering will be selected by church members at the church business meeting to be held on April 25, 2015.
