During the first full week of January since 1967, Seventh Day Baptists around the world unite in prayer, sharing meditations centered on a theme chosen by the author. Sponsored by Seventh Day Baptist World Federation (sdbwf.com), this year’s theme is “Pray, or Be Prey” written by Karen Umana. The Seventh Day Baptist World Federation is an organization formed for communication, fellowship, and support between Seventh Day Baptist churches located on six continents and from 18 different countries around the world. Please follow the prayer suggestions there and also pray for final arrangements and safe travel for delegates and observers from 18 different countries who will gather in Brazil later in the month for the Federation’s 8th Session, January 22-28. in over 19 different countries around the world.
You can join in the week of prayer January 1-7, 2017 using the 2017 Week of Prayer Booklet which is available free on the SDB World Federation website to view or print. The booklet contains short meditations as well as prayer suggestions for each day during the week. The daily entry will also be available on the Seventh Day Baptist (USA & Canada) website SDB Blog each day during the week.
We support a branch church in Puerto Rico, which started when 2 of our members moved there in 2012.
October 6-13, 2016, Pastor Robert Van Horn and his wife Lana traveled to our branch church in San Sebastian, Puerto Rico to help celebrate their 4th anniversary since they initially formed. Joel and Judith Houts, members of the SDB church in Pataskala, Ohio, were called to plant a new church when they relocated to Puerto Ricoin 2012. Pastor Robert & Lana Van Horn went down for a week in October 2012 to hold evangelistic meetings and the church has been active and growing ever since. On January 2nd, 2013 the Puerto Rico group gathered for an inauguration of the church and a baptismal service for their first five members in the ocean. And the church has been active and growing ever since!

In addition to Pastor Robert & Lana, there were also two other visitors representing the Seventh Day Baptist denomination. Pastor John Pethtel, SDB Director of Church Development and Pastoral Support and Pastor Helmer Umana, chairman of the SDB Hispanic Ministries Council also visited for the celebration.
Friday evening there was a worship service at the church to begin the Sabbath celebration. (Seventh Day Baptists believe in observing the Sabbath from sunset Friday evening to sunset Saturday evening.) The Friday evening worship service featured several interpretive dance presentations.
On Sabbath, there was an unexpected interruption in plans when Lana Van Horn fell and broke her patella (knee cap) going down some steps in the morning. While Lana spent the rest of the day in the local medical facility receiving treatment and waiting (a lot), the regularly scheduled services continued led by other members of the church.
On Sabbath, there were also recognition and prayer for three members of the church who have been called to leadership positions: Maritza (Figueroa) Gonzalez, assistant pastor with a 2 year licence to preach; Alex Joel Nunez Agudo, faithful deacon and , and Ruth Russel, “Foot Soldier” for exemplary dedication to God’s service. Lana had also made beautiful scarves for the women in the church and those were handed out and happily modeled by those receiving them! There was also an inflatable jump house for the children to enjoy during the Celebration too!

On Sunday, a men’s retreat was held with one baptism performed by Pastor Robert Van Horn and Pastor Joel Houts. The man baptized was involved with the initial group when they started in 2012, but wanted to wait for Pastor Robert Van Horn to be the one to baptize him. As John Pethtel was taking pictures at the baptism, he also fell and “accidentally” took a picture of the clouds. If you look close, you’ll see a figure in the clouds watching over the group during the baptism.
Monday, there was a seminar on Healing and Deliverance which was led by Pastor Robert Van Horn. At one point, Pastor Robert was surprised to also fall out of the chair he was sitting on. Prayer support within and for the group by many kept the Kingdom work moving forward in spite of “would-be” road blocks that kept coming up throughout the celebration events!
Tuesday was the soonest Lana could get back to see the specialist about her knee (it was a long weekend celebrating Columbus Day and the doctors were not available). Sh
e was able to get a full length hard cast put on her leg to immobilize the knee for travelling. She would need to have a surgeon look at it when they returned home for surgery (which she ended up having on November 20, 2016).
On Thursday, Pastor Robert and Lana headed back home to Pataskala, Ohio. It was a trip filled with God’s hand at work in ways we don’t understand or control, but it was a good trip following God’s leadership!
The Pataskala Seventh Day Baptist Church women hosted this year’s annual Appalachian Association Women’s Retreat at Camp Joy in Berea, WV starting Friday evening, September 23rd through Sunday morning, September 25th. The theme for the weekend was based on the 4-part audio series by Joyce Meyer entitled “Mind, Mouth, Moods, and Attitudes” which was shared by the group throughout the weekend. Other highlights for the weekend were quiet relaxation among the West Virginia hills, delicious meals & snacks, laughing along with Chonda Pierce videos, games, and connecting with old & new friends!
There were a total of 16 women in attendance from Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and one car load from our sister church in Paint Rock, Alabama!
Friends, family, and those from our community are invited to join us for an Oriental Luncheon at 12:30 pm on October 1, 2016.
A group of people are meeting at the church on Tuesday night, September 27th to pass out this flyer and personally invite some of our neighbors, as well as offer to pray for any concerns they have.
ALL ARE WELCOME.
Call the church at 740-927-0574 if you have any questions.
Each Wednesday evening you’ll find a group of curious and faithful people studying God’s Word at our mid-week Bible Study. We gather about 6:30 pm and have a time of teaching, sharing, and prayer for a little over an hour. We just finished studying the book of Hebrews and are currently viewing a DVD series by Dr. Ken Hovind on the science behind creation.
Bible study is an important way to learn more about our awesome God and his son Jesus. God does just as many amazing things today as in the past! He gives us so much wisdom and principles for living a joyful life.
We had an undersea theme for our 2016 Vacation Bible School held each evening June 13-17, 2016. Starting each evening at 6:00, we met in the sanctuary for our Assembly Time to kick off the evening and learn some cool songs. Our Assembly Leader surprised us dressed in costumes each night to go along with the theme. For 90 minutes each night, we followed 15 minutes each for Assembly, Lesson, Science, Crafts, Games, and Snacks. At 7:30 everyone went home to come back the next night!
The Lesson time helped the children to “dive deep” into the story of Noah in the Bible. A favorite part of each lesson was Sandy the puppet who showed up in class each day. In Science time the children made ships in a bottle, tested boats to sink or float, made volcanos, made fossils, and reflected rainbows as they also learned the science behind these amazing things.
In Craft time they decorated mini tote bags, put together a Noah’s Ark picture, did a scratch-off animal card, made a frame for their undersea picture, and painted a rainbow box. Then it was outside for games. The weather cooperated and the kids played several different games, but the older kids liked “Ships & Sailors” best and the younger kids liked the swing set best!
As we ended the evening, it was back inside for Snack Time with something to go along with the theme each night as well: a cup of whales, an apple wedge boat with cheese sails, animal crackers where you had to find a matching pair, and rainbow crispie treats. During snack time we had drawing for theme related prizes with different children winning something each night!
Here are some pictures of all the fun at Ocean Commotion Vacation Bible School 2016!

On May 8, 2016, the men of the church fixed and served breakfast for the women in honor of Mother’s Day. A delicious breakfast buffet of cheesy eggs, bacon, sausage, breakfast potatoes, fresh fruit, biscuits & gravy, danish, muffins, scones, and coffee/tea was served. The tables were decorated with beautiful “snowball bush” cuttings. After the meal, each woman received a decorated favor containing homemade buckeye candy. Then each woman present looked at the number on the bottom of her plate to choose a door prize. Following this, each person (young and old) had a chance to share a special memory they have with their mother. A great time of good food, good conversation, and good memories was shared by all — as you’ll see in the pictures below!
The men were in charge of the kitchen!
Mothers had yellow plates & others had white plates.
A delicious & varied breakfast buffet!
Moms & kids of all ages!
Great conversation and food!
We shared memories of our mothers after breakfast.

Our Mission Offering is designated to a different recipient each quarter
Each Sabbath we have a time in our worship service where we encourage children (and adults) to bring their spare change to contribute to our Mission Offering. You’ll hear the congregation singing the song “Building Up the Temple” as the offering is collected in a small wooden house-like container.
The Mission Offering does not replace regular Biblical tithing and giving which is collected in an offering plate located at the back of the sanctuary as people enter. The regular church offering is used to support the church programs and facilities (building mortgage, pastor’s salary, church supplies, building maintenance, classroom materials, etc.) The Mission Offering is designated to a mission project outside of our church and the recipients are discussed and selected in advance at our church business meetings.
For 2016, the first quarter (Jan-Mar) Mission Offering went to support our branch church in Puerto Rico, started in 2012 when two of our members moved there. See the Puerto Rico Mission section on this website for more information about this exciting group starting up. The second quarter (Apr-Jun) is designated to go to Wells in Africa through the Seventh Day Baptist Missionary Society. The third quarter (Jul-Sept) will go toward financing a Christmas-oriented outreach. In the past few years we have participated in Operation Christmas Child, but this year we are looking at some other alternatives which the 3Q mission offering will go toward. The fourth quarter (Oct-Dec) will be finalized later in the year.
